Some persons with disabilities in Nyamasheke said they are still facing discrimination cases and Violence from different people in their communities. This violence and discrimination cases are also among the complaints of NUDOR’s Platform in the District. During their quarterly meeting on achievements and future plan for their daily activities in terms of advocacy, the platform highlighted some cases they advocated for, that unfortunately did not receive relevant responses from leaders.
What are some of discrimination cases faced by persons with disabilities?
one of the cases highlighted is that of MUKESHIMANA Ruth, a deaf blind young lady, doing business at Mogonero Center in Nyamasheke District. She was beaten by a security Guard (umunyerondo) for unknown (or not explained) reason while doing her business. This case was advocated and reported by the NUDOR platform in Nyamasheke District in June, but still waiting for the reaction of the cell leaders where the incident occurred.
The second discrimination case was that of NYIRABARAME Henriette, a 12 years old deaf lady who was forced out of school by her educators saying she did not deserve a place at the school. The platform advocated and reported the issue but local leaders did not react and the platform is waiting for the response. The lady thrown out of school has no one from her family to care for her problems as her mother left her alone at the childhood age and got married far from the place. She was left with her grand mother who is old enough to do not get out of her home. The platform is advocating for her to go to Alvera center that is teaching the sign language to the deaf people and TVETs. The Disability Mainstreaming Officer in nyamasheke Disctrict Mr. UWAMAHORO Isai who attended the quarterly meeting of the platform guaranteed participants to follow up these cases of violance and discrimination by himself and will later inform them about the outcome. He added that the District is committed to Eradicating all forms and cases of violance and discrimination against persons with disabilities.
The NUDOR platforms were introduced at the starting of the project “Promotion of anti-discrimination practices for persons with disabilities in Rwanda” in 2019, the project operating in five District of Kicukiro in Kigali city, Burera in Northern Province, Gisagara in southern province, Nyamasheke in the West and Ngoma in the Eastern province. It is a group of volunteers and persons with disabilities who volunterily accepted to follow up and advocate for cases of discrimination and violence against persons with disabilities. It is made by 30 people of the general assembly with 7 among them elected as committee of the platform. The committee meet once every quarter of the year, while the general assembly of the platform meet once per year.
