After Corona virus Pandemic ravaged worldwide, different governments, institutions and organizations set up on public places different washing materials to help people to wash their hands before getting any service. This is because washing hands is among the most measures to fight against the spread of Corona Virus. However, some institutions set up washing materials without caring of some groups of people including some categories of persons with disabilities.
Most of the washing stations set up in Rwanda uses to press the foot to get water to wash, ignoring that some persons with disabilities have no feet. For other stations people pushes with their fingers to get water while there are some persons with physical impairment that have no hands or fingers. Some other washing materials were set up on up level that people with short stature cannot use them to wash their hands.
Different persons with disabilities have been complaining in media about some washing materials that are not accessible to them. The national Union of Disability Organizations in Rwanda NUDOR took a lead to show how no one should be left behind by setting up washing materials that are accessible to everybody. These washing materials do not need any push or press to get water. They sense themselves for hands and then open water for people. Persons with short stature have also their own short washing material that they can easily access.
NUDOR is recommending the Government, public and private institutions and organizations, companies and other organs that serves people to do the same to avoid any form of discrimination to some services from any form of Disability, status or any other reason. What do you think can also be done to fight any form of discrimination in regards to persons with disabilities? We welcome your comments.
