The training of 18 focal persons on model referral system for persons with disabilities has been organised by NUDOR at Centre Saint Vincent Pallotti Kigali from 25 to 28 June 2019 in collaboration with Humanity and Inclusion (HI) in order to increase capacity of major local actors to refer persons with disabilities to adequate and quality service in Rutsiro and Nyamasheke districts. This training is part of a larger project entitled “Promoting Inclusive Access to Services and Economic Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities in Rwanda (PIASO)” which will run from February 2019 to September 2020; This project was sponsored by US Embassy in Rwanda through HI.
The four day training attracted among others disability mainstreaming officers and NCPD coordinators from districts of intervention, representatives of NUDOR member organisations representing different types of disabilities and representatives from partners on the same project which are African Initiative for Mankind Progress Organization – AIMPO and Organization for the Promotion of Rights and solidarity of persons with Mental illness and disability in Rwanda (OPROMAMER)
The training covered the fundamental of disability rights for service provision, Personalized Social Support, CRPD compliant referral model and introduction to participatory interactive training methods as the trainees will become trainers of trainers and are expected to train others.
The project is funded by the Embassy of the United States of America in Rwanda and has as goal to improve the realization of socio-economic rights of persons with disabilities in the districts of Nyamasheke and Rutsiro, by increasing capacity of major local actors to refer persons with disabilities to adequate and quality service, expandig community mobilization for the inclusion and autonomy of persons with disabilities as well as their families within communities and increasing the capacity of persons with disabilities to engage in livelihood activities through support to persons with disabilities cooperatives towards sustainability.
In his speech, the representative of the US Embassy in Kigali, Mr John CALLAN, has said that the Government of United States of America is committed to promoting the rights of human being, including people with disabilities, and strongly believes that the financial support provided to PIASO project will greatly contribute to improving quality of life for PWDs. This training has been organized by NUDOR in partnership with HI. At the same occasion, the US Embassy representative has issued certificates to the participants.
