Human rights organizations urge everybody to fight any discrimination against persons with disabilities in Gisagara district during a meeting organized by the National Union of Disability Organizations in Rwanda NUDOR. The meeting was under the project entitled “Promotion of Anti-Discrimination practices for persons with disability in Rwanda”
During this Quarterly meeting, NUDOR presented general different cases of discrimination towards persons with disabilities in different circumstances, especially in service delivery from different service providers including Human rights Organizations that should otherwise fight against any form of discrimination. This discrimination is mostly on Mortgages, properties, service delivery and in many other corners of daily life.
During this meeting, the president of the NUDOR platform (selected volunteers persons with disabilities to fight for the rights of persons with disabilities in different Sectors of the District) underlined the persons with disability challenges in education, health, social protection and social affairs. Among these challenges are children with different categories of disabilities who do not access education due to lack of special schools related to their disabilities, lack of communication with healthcare service providers etc.

During this workshop, participants shared their point of views and some showed that they involuntarily discriminate persons with disabilities. Some gave examples of planning Radio talk shows for advocacy which are not accessible to persons with disabilities, organizing meeting in non accessible Hostel rooms and many other services they offer without thinking about persons with disabilities that could be affected. Therefore, they committed themselves to improving services their offer and make sure none is left behind due to any disability.
Sharing views in this meeting, the Director of the Social protection in Gisagara District thanks NUDOR for the strong advocacy work they are doing and urged Human Rights Organizations to be role models to others in fighting against any form of discrimination. He further promised participants to work with his colleague leaders to do the same.
These quarterly meetings occur every year in five District in Rwanda whereby the project is implemented, and target different people from different sectors to make sure persons with disabilities’ rights are respected and none is discriminated or left behind.
