On September 4, 2014 NUDOR conducted an awareness campaign in Gatsibo District that Rugarama Sector. The overall objective was raise the awareness of the general public and community on the rights of children with disabilitiess by an emphasis on education.
Mr. TWAGIRIMANA Eugene, the NUDOR Advocacy and Disability Mainstreaming Officer reminded that the campaign aimed at sharing experience on some achievements in inclusive education, issues affecting children with disabilities in education, delivering messages aiming at changing the mindset for the rights of persons with disabilities in general and children in particular.
The campaign focused on messages / presentations aiming at raising the awareness of the community and public on education of children with disabilities: NUDOR achievements and future plans, expectations from the campaign, testimonies from a child with disability and a teacher, presentation on inclusive education, presentation on United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and United Nations Convention on the Right of the Child.
Five hundred and eighteen (518) people participated to the campaign. These include District staff, head teachers, teachers, local leaders, students.
BAGWENEZA Bernard, MYRIGHT Rwanda Country Coordinator presented an overview of the two mentioned conventions. MYRIGHT Country Coordinator told the participants especially the parents that they shouldn’t consider education as privilege to children with disabilites but a favour. Parents shouldn’t have preference between children with and without disabilities but considering education as a right to every child.
Mr. MURENZI Vincent, the Project Manager in Handicap International made a presentation on inclusive education. He reminded that inclusive education has been made a priority in seven years program of His Excellence the President of the Republic of Rwanda. And this should take into consideration to every child. The objective of inclusive education is to ensure equal opportunities and promote their right to education.
The inclusive education considers the diversity management and valuing human being. The teaching methodology should consider that children are different in their learning process. Based on this, there : strong children in mathematics, strong children in languages, children with facilities of learning with visual examples, children studying by seeing the originality of learned things, children strong in studying alone, children studying with others
MUKASHYAKA Dina, is physical impaired and studies in secondary one at G.S Nyagasiga in Rugarama sector. She called upon teachers, parents to always help her to fulfil her education. She highlighted the challenge of accessing to prosthetics that constitute the materials she needs in her day to day live.
URUJENI Consolée, the Executive Secretary of Rugarama Sector said in her closing speech, she said people should know that persons with disability are able of doing many things:
‘A child with disability who went to school is prevented from begging and can provide support to other community members. I am sure the participants here have got the important message through the presented drama. I call upon all head of schools here present that no child with disability should be denied access to school. No parent should hide a child with disability in house; we want all children to go to school and access a quality education.
