The National Union of disability organisations in Rwanda NUDOR says that a person with disability is a person of the country that should be supported when he has a problem like other people. NUDOR said this after visiting NIYONSABA Jeanne, a mother of 4 children, who has Physical disability and HIV/AIDS positive, living in a small and old house which can fall on her and her four children at any time especially in rain season. NUDOR visited this family this Wednesday 10th February 2021.
The National Union of disability organisation in Rwanda NUDOR knew this family via social media with a posted video where she was asking support and decided to visit and advocate for her after getting this family information. Arriving at place where this family is living in Gahanga Sector, Kicukiro District in Kigali city, Her neighbors admitted that this family is living in deep poverty where even getting food is a problem. They are living from a small amount of money that the Government provides to her every month as a direct support from the Program of VUP (vision Umurenge Program).
Expressing her Family problems, NIYONSABA Jeanne said that they have many problems including deep poverty and not having a home to live in. They are living in a house that can fall on her and her four children, the house lent by her family not his own. However, she indicated that poverty is the problem she shares with some other people, but the big challenge she want first to be advocated is not having a safe home, admitting their lives are in danger from a house that can cost them anytime the heavy rains come.
Visiting her, NUDOR invited local leaders from Kicukiro District and Gahanga Sector where her family lives. Asked why they did nothing to help her to own the house as the Government always does it for other homeless poor families, The Sector Gahanga officer in charge of Social affairs responded that they did not have information about this family and admitted that after knowing this, they are going to start the process of enlisting her to the list of people to be offered homes.
The officer in charge of persons with disability in Kicukiro District Mr. BIZIREMA Shadrack said that after this visit some thing is going to be done for This family. He added that they asked her family members to make bricks and admitted that in partnership with partners, The District and the Sector will see how they can provide materials to build the house. He said that it is needed for her family to provide the land where the house will be built and land lease to get construction Permit to start this project. Fortunately NIYONSABA Jeanne’s family accepted their part in providing what requested and wait for the support of District and Partners because themselves have no other capacity than what they accepted.
The National Union of Disability Organisations in Rwanda which was Represented by its president and Executive Secretary, said that they visited this family with local leaders to advocate for them to be recognized and supported as they do for other poor families. NUDOR representatives highlighted that a person with disability is a person of the cell, sector, District and the country as other citizens and that no one should be left behind due to his or her disability. Furthermore, NUDOR committed to partner with local leaders for any support and will provide assistance to help her get adequate prosthesis to replace the old one she has Today that seemed not fully supporting her.
