On Friday, May 27, 2022 in Rubavu District, 13 families that have children with disabilities received houses built or repaired by the National Union of Disability organizations in Rwanda NUDOR and Its partner organization Caritas de Nyundo under the Child development program supported by Liliane Foundation.
These houses have been built for the mentioned over families to replace the ones completely destroyed or damaged by heavy earthquakes that followed the eruption of Nyiragongo Volcano from the republic democratic of Congo in the region that borders Rubavu district in the western province of Rwanda last year of 2021. They were built for 13 families that have children with disabilities that have been already in Child Development program implemented by NUDOR under the support of Liliane foundation. Among the 13 houses offered to the families, 5 of them were built from the Foundation while the remaining 8 were repaired.
In the ceremony of handing over the houses to the families, ISHIMWE Pacifique, the vice mayor in charge of social affairs in Rubavu District who chaired the launch and handover ceremony appreciated the support from NUDOR, its partner organization Caritas de Nyundo and the partner Liliane foundation for the great support offered to persons with disabilities after facing so tough times of Volcano eruptions that was followed by heavy earthquakes which destroyed or damaged different infrastructures and buildings in western province of the country, specifically in Rubavu district which borders to the region of the democratic republic of Congo where this volcano is.
The vice mayor appreciated the support and reacted to the complaints of the families given the houses that they lack some important health facilities including electricity and water, where she thanked the partners (NUDOR, Caritas and Liliane Foundation) for building the house and promised them that the District itself or with its partners will do the rest to make sure they have good lives. “We thank NUDOR, Caritas de Nyundo and the partner foundation for building 13 houses to our Children with Disability families who suffered heavy earthquakes last year. We will ourselves as the district or with our other partners do the rest for their good lives and welfare including providing them the water and electricity” She said while addressing the public and the media.
Last year earthquakes after Nyiragongo volcano eruption did not only displace people, but also destroyed different infrastructures such as roads, houses and electricity facilities. The district of Rubavu collaborated with NUDOR and caritas de Nyundo in the planning process, building and handing over the houses. They also offered two plots where by two houses were built.
